WTDC Release Destinations

West Texas Detention Center does not have one universal release trail. Its current contract role crosses county and federal custody. A county prisoner may go back to the sending county, enter the community under that court's order, or transfer elsewhere. A USMS prisoner may move to another pretrial contract bed, enter BOP custody after sentence, or leave custody under a federal court order. The building name alone cannot settle which event occurred.

Ask WTDC for the sending authority, register or booking number, movement date, and destination. Then check the responsible agency. The Hudspeth County release search is useful when the booking belongs to Hudspeth, but it cannot substitute for a federal or another county's record.

Confirm a WTDC Release

Start with identity and custody authority, not a broad web search. WTDC can confirm its own movement data, while the sending authority and court establish the legal result. A contract list only shows what WTDC may do. It does not prove who controlled one detainee.

1. Call WTDC with the full legal name, birth date, and known register or booking number.
2. Ask which agency placed the person and whether the movement was community release, transfer, or return to that agency.
3. Check the sending county or federal court docket for the signed disposition.
4. Use the BOP locator only for a sentenced federal prisoner, not every USMS detainee.
5. Request the WTDC movement record and the custodian's release record when documentary proof is needed.

WTDC Records and Contact

The 2025 WTDC PREA audit is the best current source for the facility identity, operator, phone, size, and custody mix. It identifies LaSalle Corrections as operator and John Jacobs as warden.

Ask the records contact to preserve the distinction between a WTDC movement log and the legal custodian's release record. If the sending authority is a government body, direct the records request to that authority as well. Private operation does not turn every federal, county, or immigration record into one WTDC file.

WTDC Custody Mix Matters

The audit reports a designed capacity of 1,398, an audit population of 969, and a past-year average daily population of 980. At audit time, WTDC housed county and USMS prisoners. Historical agreements encompass USMS, BOP, ICE, and county detention, but those agreements describe authority to contract rather than the status of each person.

This changing mix is why “WTDC inmate search” is not a single database task. Search the person within the sending authority's system. Confirm any last movement with WTDC. Older reports about the center or a broad contract agreement should not override the current audit.

WTDC Federal Release Records

A USMS pretrial detainee may not appear in the BOP locator. Use the Western District of Texas, El Paso Division docket for the case and the USMS FOIA route for agency records. The docket can show a detention, bond, dismissal, plea, sentence, or judgment, but WTDC must still confirm the physical movement.

After a federal sentence, search the BOP Inmate Locator by number when possible. Former-prisoner results can show “Released” and a date or “Not in BOP custody.” That wording concerns federal BOP custody. It does not resolve a Hudspeth charge, a USMS contract placement, or a later ICE hold.

WTDC ICE and Detainers

Do not assume every WTDC detainee is in ICE custody. The current audit reported county and USMS prisoners even though broader agreements mention ICE. First ask which authority controlled the person. If WTDC confirms an ICE handoff or immigration custodian, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator with an A-number and country of birth or biographical details.

ODLS is a current-location tool, not a release archive. No result can reflect transfer, processing delay, identity mismatch, removal, release, or an omitted category. Obtain the movement record and the immigration record before reaching a conclusion.

WTDC Record Request Scope

A focused request should name the person, birth date, register or booking number, sending agency, approximate WTDC dates, and the exact existing records sought. Ask for admission, movement date and time, movement reason, receiving destination, and releasing authority. Request an estimate if fees may apply.

Send parallel requests when ownership is divided. WTDC may hold the movement log; the county, USMS, BOP, ICE, or court may hold the legal disposition. Privacy, law-enforcement, and security limits can affect disclosure. A denial from one custodian does not show that no other responsive record exists.

Reconcile WTDC Release Records

A reliable WTDC account links the facility movement to the sending authority's legal record. Start with the exact name, birth date, WTDC booking or register number, approximate admission date, and the agency named by the center. Ask whether the person left through a court-ordered community release, transfer to another contract bed, return to the sending county, movement into BOP custody, or another agency handoff.

The next source depends on that answer. A county prisoner belongs to the sending county's case and release trail. A USMS pretrial prisoner belongs to the federal docket and Marshals movement trail, even while physically housed at WTDC. A sentenced prisoner who entered BOP custody can be checked in the BOP locator. Immigration verification is appropriate only after WTDC or another official record identifies ICE custody.

Dates should be labeled by source. The WTDC departure date proves a movement from the center. A court order supplies the legal event. A receiving locator supplies later custody status. These may occur on different days without conflict. If the center reports a destination but the receiving system has no result, confirm spelling and identifiers, allow for processing lag, and ask the sending authority for the transport or designation record.

The center's large scale does not change this method. Its audit figures describe the institution, not any named detainee. Current custody mix also matters more than a historic agreement that lists agencies WTDC was authorized to serve.
